The National Audit Office (NAOT) of Tanzania (www.nao.go.tz) is the independent authority charged with the task of reviewing the government's performance headed by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG). It is the one body with the legal power to access any government record and hence currently the only body capable of exposing government mismanagement. Since Tanzania does not have a Right to Access Information law, citizens have to rely on the CAG for audited reports of government activities. The OGP commitment regarding the NAOAT office is as follows:
#3.1 Improve National Audit Office/Controller and Auditor General's website to make it more open and user friendly and provide data in machine readable format
The NAOT website in recent months has been fully updated and contains all the latest audited reports. It is also fairly easy to navigate with the CAG reports accessible from the home page and all reports arranged chronologically. The OGP commitment does promise to provide data in machine readable format however we only came across PDF files which are generally not useful for analysing large datasets. We hope in the future data will also be provided as excel spreadsheets. However, for the good work done by the NAOT office to keep up their website updated we rate this as PROMISE KEPT
